Guts pics

Here's another shot of the inside of the case.  You can see the Sapphire card in place on the right (I wish there were more space between it and the hard drive caddy, but temps never seem to go beyond 69F under load, so I'm ok), the 2 hard drives in place in the standard Dell hard drive caddy (used the Scythe brackets, worked out nicely and there is even about 0.25" space between the 2 drives) as well as the various adapters I used to make it all work.

    Hi Adam,

nice job and very usable informations.
I have a Optiplex 760 too. I would like upgrade the graphic card and I have some questions:

    - wich type of Sapphire Radeon HD6670 used you? Low profile like this:
    or regular like this:
On the pictur I can't determine.

    - Your power supply is original? I have 255W power supply inside and AMD recommended 400w.

    Thank you in advance

  2. Hey Feri,

The card I used is the low profile one. I am using the original 235W power supply that came with my Optiplex 760.

I'm not sure why AMD recommends a 400W power supply as the card doesn't draw that much power, see here:

I haven't had any issues with this card.

  3. Hi Adam,

thanks for your reply. Unfortunately in our country (Hungary) yet cannot be got this video card, but will be already on the next week. Maybe.
Anyway what is your experience with the temperature and the noise of the grafic card fan?

  4. Feri,

Idle temperature is about 40C, highest load temperature I've seen is 69C (after playing GTAIV for an hour ;)

The fan on the card makes is VERY quiet, it's so soft that I don't think I have heard it really! The only fan I can hear is the CPU fan.

  5. I'm sorry, the idle temperature is about 50C, not 40C as I wrote.

  6. Ok, I've had it running for about 10 minutes now, only the browser open, and it IS 40C :) See my last blog post above.

  8. I stumbled upon this after getting a cheap Optiplex 760 small form factor, same as the one you posted on this site. Thanks for posting! This was very informative.

I'm trying to find a nice slim internal blu-ray drive to swap out the existing dvd drive, but I haven't had much luck - it seems like the only Sony Optiarc I could find is sold out.

My question is: can I take an external slim tray-loading drives and take the drive out and put it in the slim 5.25" bay? Is it likely to be SATA inside (and using a SATA to USB bridge)?

I guess that if I needed to, I could use an external drive, but I would much prefer to keep the drive internal.

    1. Hi Cary. That's a good question, I'm not sure if any old slim drive would fit in there. The Dell slim drive that comes with the system "clicks" in when you push it in to install it, I'm not sure if it's a standard slim style bracket or some special Dell bracket that is built into the Dell slim drive itself that allows it to work with this particular case. You could always take the drive out of your external housing and check to see if the brackets are the same and pop it in. You might get lucky.

  9. I have another question for you: are you using the floppy drive? Is it possible to mount a second 3.5" hard drive in that bay, rather than using the 2 x 2.5" hard drive bracket you described?

    1. Nope, I took out the floppy drive, had no need for it. I tried to mount a hard drive in that area, but the holes don't really line up with a hard drive. I also tried using the bracket that the floppy drive is housed in, but that doesn't line up either, so it's pretty much a no-go.

  10. Blue screens like that are usually caused by bad drivers or bad hardware. Make sure you're installing the correct driver for the correct OS, as well as the correct architecture (32bit or 64bit)

  11. That's strange. Is your card designed to work directly from the PCI Express slot, or does it require additional power?
